Malaysian consumer groups press food outlets to make sugarless beverages cheaper

GEORGE TOWN, Malaysia - Consumer groups are pressing for food outlets to have different prices for drinks with and without sugar. Consumers Association of Penang president S.M. Mohd Idris said sugarless drinks should be 10 sen cheaper. "Many people are also doing away with sugar for health reasons, and this should be encouraged," he added. Fomca secretary-general Datuk Paul Selvaraj said it was only fair for consumers to pay less if they ordered drinks with less or no sugar. "Lower prices for unsweetened drinks would also be a financial incentive to reduce sugar consumption," he added. Budget 2014 removed the sugar subsidy of 34 sen per kilo to reduce sugar consumption and the prevalence of diabetes among Malaysians.
