This is not related to the Bak chor mee topic but just sharing my observations about the Japanese liking kaya comment. Many Japanese people I know do not like kaya (of course there are the ones who do) because they generally don't like coconut milk. Those who love Laksa probably will like kaya as well. And contrary to what you heard, I heard that the kaya franchise in Tokyo is not having rave reviews. Many youngsters do not appreciate the toast, they go in more for drinks. Japanese here in Singapore have also asked me why the butter between kaya toasts is cold and why does it have to be such a big thick piece, so I guess this concept is very alien to them, though I can't generalise this comment.
