Stinky fruit - Durian way to flush out heavy metals: via @AddThis

GEORGE TOWN, Malaysia: A team of researchers at Universiti Sains Malaysia here have produced a powdery substance from durian rind which can be used to remove heavy metals in the human body. Heavy metals, such as lead, mercury and arsenic, can cause severe dysfunction of the kidney, reproductive system, liver, brain and central nervous system. Industralisation and urbanisation have resulted in significant amounts of heavy metals being deposited in the natural aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Lead researcher Associate Professor Azhar Mat Easa of the School of Industrial Technology said it took the team two years to produce the substance which is known as mDRP (modified durian rind pectin). Other members of the research team are Wong Weng Wai and Phuah Eng Tong. They were awarded a bronze medal for their work on mDRP at this year's Malaysia Technology Expo. Azhar said the ...
