Meat and cheese are mixed during the production of Kaesekrainer sausages at Wiesbauer factory in Vienna, April 26, 2012. Slovenia has made a bid for the minced pork sausage Kranjska Klobasa (Krainer Sausage), which originated in Northern Slovenia during the 19th century, to be given protected EU status. However Austria, with its popular cheese-filled variation of the sausage known as Kaesekrainer, is opposing Slovenia's bid. The EU commission has applied to the patenting office on behalf of Slovenia to claim exclusive name rights to the sausage. If it is approved, sausage stands around Austria will no longer be able to sell products as "Krainer" or "Kaesekrainer". Click on the thumbnails below to see pictures of the sausages.
