Singapore Catering Favourites: Carrot Cake (Chai Tow Kway)

This “cake” bears no resemblance to the conventional form of cake that you may find in a bakery, indeed this cake cannot be found in a bakery. So why the name? The dish’s main ingredient is white radish, Chinese radish, also known by the name of daikon and also,on occasion, called white carrot. Being made of Chinese radishes you would guess that it was of Chinese origin, and you would be correct! It originates from the Chinese province of Chaoshan, and here it is known as ‘chao gao guo’ (fried starch cake). This is a standard dish in dim sum cuisine and can often be found in overseas Chinatown restaurants. This Chaoshan version mainly consists of rice flour, and it was only in Singapore that the addition of white radish became a thing; hence giving it the name carrot cake, a name only really used in Singapore.
