Theatre Tuesday: Despite going to clown school, seasoned stage actor Alvin Chiam is still an 'angry man'

‘I went to clown school because people said I was funny. Of course, six months after I was there, they told me, you are a tragic actor. And I said – but I came to be funny!’ says local actor Alvin Chiam, mock crying behind his glasses with a mischievous glint in his eye. The spry 41 year old started his acting career more than a decade ago, performing leading roles in Chinese classics like Thunderstorm and Island , and co-directing serious, issue-filled shows in Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Then in 2007, he decided to become a full-time student of master clown Philippe Gaulier for two years. 'Twelve Angry Men' runs from 15-17 Feb at the Esplanade Theatre Studio and will be performed in Mandarin with English surtitles.
