Rap’s place of prominence in the zeitgeist has never been more paradoxical. As the most visible and impactful form of black music, it’s enjoying a culture-saturating popularity that is totally unprecedented. Yet, the laments that its contemporary manifestation is a disgrace to its legacy and traditions, that it exists now as nothing more than a hollow, disingenuous vehicle for nihilistic capitalism have also never been louder. This is the dilemma that the art of Mick Jenkins is enmeshed in.
