Pom and Poko, the raccoon dogs from Japan

With their black facial mask and pointed snout, raccoon dogs bear an uncanny resemblance to raccoons. Also known as tanukis in Japan, they are found mainly in East Asia. The Japanese regard them as bringers of prosperity and luck. Tanukis are the only species of dog to hibernate in winter. Preparation starts in autumn, when they stock up fat reserves and grow their fur to better insulate against the cold. Our very own Pom and Poko came to us from Japan’s Asahiyama Zoo.
