The arts in Singapore have changed substantially in the past two decades. From being a so-called ‘cultural desert’ in the 1970s, there has come about more state funding, better infrastructural development and more young people who have formal arts training. It seems that riches abound, with even a theatre and a museum ensconced in the heart of the latest ‘icon’ of New Singapore, the Marina Bay Sands convention complex – but yet at the same time, we hear people (both practitioners and other participants) asking, ‘Where are the arts going to now? There’s so much going on…’ In the 1980s, when contemporary art forms in the visual arts and theatre became prominent, the questions to be asked on the role of the arts and cultural identity seemed clearer.
