Playwright Joel Tan chats about his new play (opens Jan 24) on how a disaster affected 14 people's lives

‘Why do we need people so much? They can be cruel and do all kinds of hurtful things to each other, but we still crave human relationships,’ muses Joel Tan, the local playwright behind People , a play inspired by the 2011 Japanese earthquake. Dressed in his trademark batik shirt, the young writer’s tone of jaded irony somewhat belies his tender 26 years. But then again, his entire CV is pretty impressive. His works Family Outing (2011, part of the Man Singapore Theatre Festival) and Jack and the Bean Sprout (2013, Wild Rice) both had a cast and crew that was up to twice his age, including Lim Kay Siu and Ivan Heng. He also recently assistant-directed Huzir Sulaiman’s Atomic Jaya , starring stage legends Claire Wong and Karen Tan.
