Ah, time for Chinese New Year again. Everyone knows it’s the king of all public holidays here in Singapore. Even as an Indian guy here, I’m proud to say that I look forward to it every year. First, it’s the only holiday where we get two full days off – except not this year, as the second day falls on a Saturday (not off to such a lucky start, huh, wooden horse?). The same thing actually happened last Deepavali, which was perhaps even more devastating since that meant we didn’t even get a single day off. Even when I was an eight-year-old in Bedok View Primary School, I noticed that Chinese New Year was different. On the eve of Hari Raya, for example, the Malay children would get to leave school early. On the eve of Deepavali, the Indian kids got this privilege.
