The location Bonifacio has chosen to set up shop is somewhat surprising; the charming shophouse along Kreta Ayer Road is not a typical stomping ground for the Filipino community. However, it stays true to the roots of Filipino cuisine, serving up homey and tasty yet calorie-laden portions, albeit with a modern touch. The KKK (ignore the disconcerting name, it’s nothing to do with men in white pointy hats) is a starter of four tiny parcels of deep-fried kangkong puffs crowned with Mexican-inspired mango and tomato salsa; the lush chicken binakol soup is served with chicken chunks, sliced coconut and – strangely – chye sim (flowering Chinese cabbage); hotplate-grilled boneless milkfish is topped with cubed onions and tomatoes.
