Get the Ambience Right SLEEP-INDUCING COLOURS Stick to a calming shade of blue, green or yellow. A study to look at the influence of colour on sleep quality, by hotel-booking website Travelodge, found that these were the most conducive to a good night's sleep. Purple, grey and brown bedrooms, on the other hand, gave sleepers the least amount of shut-eye. DIM THE ROOM The darker, the better. When the retina in your eyes detects low or no light, it sends signals to the brain to produce melatonin, a hormone that tells your body it’s time to sleep, explains Dr Kenny Pang, ENT and sleep specialist at Asia Sleep Centre. Tip: If you need to use the bathroom at night, switch on a dim light to help you see – you might have trouble falling asleep again after bright light has stimulated your senses.
