Material Culture and the Problem of Beauty * Please note that the lecture has been brought forward from 26 April 2011. Any inconvenience caused is regretted. Museums and universities have recently pulled away from the concept of art, or at least of high art, in favour of material culture, visual studies, and the like. But does this also imply that beauty and aesthetic appreciation are not worthy of serious study? Should museums embrace archaeological fragments, historical relics as well as works of ‘art’? A broad definition of the history of art that welcomes a wide range of forms may also help us appreciate creativity. This talk considers a few case studies relevant to the Asian Civilisations Museum.
