Apr 19: The Natural Red Dye: A Forgotten Textile History of Coromandel Coast

This presentation describes the journey of identifying natural red dyes used in the Indian trade textiles from the collection of the Asian Civilisations Museum. Red, blue and their shades are the major colour combinations found on these historic textiles. A number of studies have been done on the identification of indigo on historic textiles, however research on red dye is left wanting. A three-month research field trip to India was undertaken to cull out the plant source from literature, identify the respective dye plant from the herbarium collection and field collection of the live plant, and eventually, process and prepare the red dyed standard textile samples. The presentation will focus on the plant source of natural red dyes from the Coromandel Coast, and its traditional technique of application as surface decoration on textiles.
