Guilinggao, the popular Chinese ‘herbal’ remedy is actually made of the plastron (bottom shell) of freshwater turtles. Freshwater turtles are commonly eaten in soups and other delicacies reputedly touted as 'health tonics'. Across Asia, exorbitant numbers of turtles are illegally harvested and sourced for trade such that the drastic decline in the past decade has been dubbed the 'Asian Turtle Crisis'. The Indian Star Tortoise is one of the most heavily traded tortoises in the pet trade due to its attractive shell markings. Most freshwater turtles and tortoises are smuggled in appalling conditions. For every shelled individual bought at the pet shop, there will have been many that died along the way. Will you put a stop to this turtle tragedy?
