Androgynous, sensual performers like Antony Hegarty, Patrick Wolf and Of Montreal’s Kevin Barnes have shown the indie industry that you can portray yourself however the hell you want. And the queer, perplexing Callinan from Down Under isn’t compromising either. Besides being extremely comfortable with nudity and other controversial antics like having nearly 20 effects pedals on-stage, Callinan is also one sonic chameleon whose music preferences change as erratically as his questionable capers. Held together by a vocal timbre that reflects the gravelly harshness of Nick Cave and The Horrors’ Faris Badwan, his unfettered experimentations flow from dark-wave to new-wave, and even from piano-hugged bedroom pop to raucous post-punk. Literally screaming to be heard, we took this as our cue to let Callinan acquaint himself with y’all.
