It’s never easy when any band is propped up by the dual-edged label of next big thing, but The Drums have learnt to take it in their stride. Jonathan Pierce and Jacob Graham first met as kids before forming short-lived electro-pop outfit Goat Explosion. The big turning point though was when they toned down the synthesizers, picked up guitars and recruited drummer Connor Hanwick (former Cape of No Hope) on their campaign of world domination by imposing heart-soaring ‘50s pop exuberance onto their underlying Factory Records sound (think Shangri-Las meets The Wake). Their Summertime EP and eponymous debut album effortlessly made the indie world march their beat and Jacob explains how.
