Anyone can be smiling all day, but for some, smiling is a façade; an optimistic substitute in place of the burdensome financial struggles back at home . I am familiar with that. I lived in poverty for 19 years. Throughout my childhood, food was scarce at home and meat was a luxury. My family showered from pails of water and we could not even afford combs to brush our hair. Most of the clothes that my siblings and I owned were donated from people and up till today, I have never bought my own clothes from a retail store. Even my precious collection of ethnic costumes was entirely given to me by others. When I was 18, I had an embarrassing moment on my first date with my boyfriend at a high-end café.
