#TalksatACM: Christianity as an Asian court religion. 2 Jun, 7pm. Speaker: Dr Alan Chong

Although no royal court in Asia converted to Christianity, the religion played a prominent role in many of them. While the philosophical and scientific aspects of the missionaries, especially the Jesuits, made them appeal to scholarly elites, Christian art was also a powerful draw. The Muslim court of the Ayyubids (13th century) owned objects with Christian images. The Ottoman sultan Mehmed II, conqueror of Istanbul, was fascinated with Italian Renaissance art, including Christian images of various types, as were the Safavids. The Mughal emperors Akbar and Jahangir not only collected European paintings and prints, they commissioned a rich body of images from their own artists based on Christian art.
