He pioneered the local beatbox scene – using his voice to create beats, melodies and audio effects. Now, vocal percussionist Dharni (left) is making his mark internationally. The 26-year-old, whose full name is Dharni Ng, is now based in Warsaw and has just released his first recorded work, C’est Dingue (French for “This is crazy”), available for free online. His long-time fans might be surprised to hear the tune, as instead of just using his mouth, the electronic dance track sees Dharni using synthesizers to enhance his sound. “I’m expanding my scope,” he tells Life! in a telephone interview from Dubai, where he was one of the main acts at the Tiger Translate 2013 music and arts festival. “I don’t want to just make music for beatbox fans, I want to make music for other listeners too.” The four-minute track was recorded in a studio in Warsaw, with help from his close frien...
