Before the UK ever joined the EU, another group of like-minded nations came together in 1967 to promote regional trade and prosperity – the Association of South East Asian Nations. More than 50 years later, I will be meeting trade ministers tomorrow at the ASEAN forum in Singapore. ASEAN has come a long way in the last half century, representing some of the world’s most dynamic, fast-growing economies. Speaking alongside the EU’s trade commission, it’s an opportunity to demonstrate the UK’s global leadership for free trade, as a close partner of the European Union and ASEAN.
