For Mutemath, 'rocking out' means crowdsurfing and performing handstands in concerts

A MUTEMATH show is never just a music performance. Crowdsurfing on an air mattress (or even better, a drum) or pounding on the keyboard while performing a handstand on it – these are just some of the on-stage antics of the outrageous four-piece US rock band. And then there’s Darren King’s mad, pounding drum solos. It’s practically a circus act, and fans are lapping it up. When LOUD spoke to King in a phone interview from his home in Texas, the 30-year-old said Mutemath’s main goal is to entertain. “We consider ourselves entertainers and we’re alright with that. It’s more important than being an artiste,” he explained. “We always want to be known as growing entertainers.” The New Orleans-based band are made up of King, vocalist/keyboardist Paul Meany, guitarist Todd Gummerman and bassist Roy Mitchell-Cardenas.
