Irish-English singer-songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan, who had a string of chart-topping ballads in the 1970s and 1980s, is old-fashioned when it comes to writing songs. Believe it or not, the 66-year-old musician still uses old-school devices such as 1970s boomboxes and cassette tapes to record his music, much like his approach to songwriting, which has not changed at all in the past 40-odd years. O'Sullivan, who plays his first concert here as part of the Esplanade's annual Mosaic Music Festival next month, says: "The only thing that's changed in all those years is that I just have a more expensive piano than I did in the 1970s. It's comforting to me because it means technology doesn't affect the purpose of what I do. As a songwriter, what do you do? Come up with a good melody and lyrics. End of story."
