Malaysia Airlines logs another profit on cost cuts

KUALA LUMPUR: Struggling flag carrier Malaysia Airlines said on Thursday it recorded its best quarterly result for two years as it continued to push forward with a cost-cutting campaign. The airline, which a year ago admitted it was in "crisis", recorded a second consecutive quarterly net profit, earning 51 million ringgit (US$16.5 million) for the last three months of 2012. This left it with a 433 million ringgit net loss for the 2012 financial year, a huge improvement from a record 2.5 billion loss the previous year. "The massive swing from a 1.3 billion ringgit loss in the fourth quarter of 2011 to a profit of 51 million ringgit ... shows that our business plan is working," chief executive Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said in a statement.
