Mufti announces start of fasting month

SINGAPORE: Muslims in Singapore will begin fasting for the month of Ramadan from August 1. Singapore's Mufti or Islamic religious leader, Dr Mohamed Fatris Bakaram, made the announcement on Sunday. He said the date was based on astronomical calculations and on the visibility of the crescent moon. This is the first time Dr Mohd Fatris is making the announcement since he took office as Mufti on January 1 this year.
