SINGAPORE - On its first day of non-stop trading yesterday, the Singapore Exchange (SGX) chalked up a turnover of 1.46 billion shares worth S$1.73 billion, nearly 1.5 times the daily average of 979 million shares traded in June. But the rise was more to do with the fillip provided by the announcement in the United States of a last-minute deal to avoid a debt default than the fact that many remisiers and dealers had their lunch in the office. The SGX had cancelled its traditional lunch break as of yesterday to operate non-stop from 9am to 5pm. Between 12.30pm and 2pm - formerly the lunch break- turnover was S$110 million, accounting for 6.4 per cent of the day's trading. The Straits Times Index gained 0.8 per cent to 3,215.27 at the close of trading, its highest since Jan 28, on relief over the US debt deal.
