If Govt can run PUB as a monopoly, it can nationalise public transport and make it profitable, our reader argues.

MR TOH Cheng Seong ('Offer an alternative better than nationalisation'; July 22) disagreed with Mr Gerald Giam's commentary ('Consider the economic reality of transport here'; July 19), which argued for the nationalisation of public transport. Mr Toh asked the Workers' Party's (WP) Mr Giam to state the cost of buying up outstanding shares of the two operators, SMRT and SBS Transit, suggesting that the buyout would cost taxpayers dearly. Here is my calculation: Buying back SMRT and SBS shares from non-government hands will cost about $1.2 billion and $467 million respectively. SMRT's and SBS' net profits after tax for each of the past two years have been about $160 million and $54 million respectively. Therefore, the cost of buying back SMRT and SBS shares would be recouped in about 71/2 years and nine years respectively. If we factor in the profits of SMRT and SBS between ...
