Singapore | Hawker stall rental rates decided by market, not ministry

SINGAPORE - The Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources has no plans to moderate rental rates of hawker stalls, even as a Member of Parliament pointed out that the practice of subletting could give rise to hiked rents and an increase in food prices. The MP, Madam Cynthia Phua (Aljunied GRC), gave an example of how a hawker stall owner is renting the stall for $5,500 when the subsidised rent is only $350. Environment and Water Resources Minister Yaacob Ibrahim told Parliament yesterday that market rents are reassessed at every tenancy renewal and the rate may change depending on prevailing market conditions. About half of the 6,258 cooked food stalls in the hawker centres are subsidised.
