Wanted: Video games for solving real world issues

VIDEO games can be serious business. Especially serious video games. If you can come up with games that can be used to train, say, nurses or soldiers, the Media Development Authority (MDA) will commit S$5 million to developing them. In its call for proposals from Singapore developers on Wednesday, the MDA said it will commit the money over two years to fund selected projects. Also known as 'serious games', this category of video games are designed to solve real-world business problems. They can be entertaining - but fun is not the main criterion. The MDA's call was made jointly with Britain's Serious Games Institute (SGI), which focuses on researching collaborative games for training in industries like defence, education, scientific exploration and health care.
