What forum writer *really* wants is for MOE to name the top Chinese-Jewish-Irish-Mongolian student every year.

THE exclusion of Alexandria Shamini Joseph, who scored nine A1s in the O levels, from the Ministry of Education's (MOE) list of top scorers because her race is listed under 'Others' surprises and concerns me ('She wins big despite bitter custody battle'; Tuesday). The ministry's website lists top achievers under the standard categories, namely, Chinese, Indian, Malay and Eurasian. The classification has led to a strange situation whereby achievements of foreign students are listed while the achievement of a native-born performer is excluded. The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority now permits hyphenated race options for Singaporean children born to parents of different races. Isn't it time for MOE to update its list to reflect the current reality? Indeed, all other government agencies should look at using race classifications in listings sparingly and only where specific...
