Shanmugam: President cannot engage in public debate with PAP govt #sgpolitics

For the second time in a month, PAP Law Minister Shanmugam has stepped forward to clarify the constitutional ‘limitations’ of the Elected President to downplay his role and importance. The three presidential hopefuls – Tan Jee Say, Tan Kin Lian and Tan Cheng Bock have put the PAP-endorsed candidate Tony Tan on a defensive by stressing their ‘independence’ from the despotic PAP regime and expressing willingness to speak up for Singaporeans, in public. Shanmugam has earlier ticked off Tan Kin Lian and Tan Cheng Bock for issuing misleading statements to confuse the public over the role of the President. In a speech made at the Institute of Policy Studies yesterday, Shanmugam reiterated again “that all public acts by the president – including public speech – can only be made on the advice of the Cabinet, except for the powers specifically vested in the office.” “The president ...
