Japan boosts aftercare services for cancer patients

SHIZUOKA PREFECTURE, Japan: In Japan, around 400 hospitals are designated for the treatment of cancer. However, aftercare services for recovering cancer patients are still lagging behind, something Shizuoka Cancer Centre wants to change. The prefectural cancer centre opened in 2002. It's regarded as one of the best facilities for cancer treatment. But the hospital wants to be known for more than just cancer treatment. Dr Ken Yamaguchi, president of the Shizuoka Cancer Centre, said: "Cancer treatment and technology can be done in every country including Japan, the United States and Singapore. But spiritual care for the patients and family members is very important. "I believe Shizuoka Cancer Centre does best in terms of spiritual care for the cancer patients and their families."
