China announces arrests of 96 suspects in cases linked to melamine-tainted dairy products - The Straits Times

BEIJING - CHINA has detained nearly 100 people suspected of producing and selling melamine-tainted dairy products, state media said on Thursday, despite a ban after the chemical killed at least six babies in 2008. The Food Safety Committee Office of the State Council, China's cabinet, said authorities had investigated 40 cases involving tainted milk and detained 96 suspects since July, the official Xinhua news agency reported. A total of 2,132 tonnes of milk powder containing melamine, an industrial chemical usually used to make plastic, has also been discovered since then. All of that had been leftover powder from the 2008 scare or made with tainted ingredients from the scandal, in which Chinese authorities said at least six babies died and another 300,000 were sickened.
