Jim Carrey says a career “high point” was proving critics wrong about Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. The 1994 comedy was Jim’s breakout movie, earning him international fame and seeing him reprise the role for hit sequel Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls the following year. Jim, now 49, remembers feeling anxious about how the movie would be received, as certain critics slammed his performance. “I read a manuscript of their review of Ace Ventura a few days before it came out and I thought it was sunk,” he told the BBC. “They said it was the worst movie ever made.” However, some years later, after Jim had enjoyed roles in films such as 1998 comedy The Truman Show, he saw the critics appear on television explaining how wrong they had been.
