Is interpretation of Constitution too narrow, asks Tan Kin Lian #sgpresident

SINGAPORE - A day after Minister for Law K Shanmugam noted that the Elected President can act and speak only on the advice of the Cabinet, presidential hopeful Tan Kin Lian said he thought this interpretation of the Constitution was "too narrow". In a blog post yesterday, Mr Tan said he had earlier looked at the Constitution to check if the President "can be the voice of the people to bring issues to the Government". He added: "I do not find any requirement that the President should be 'dumb'." A lawyer he had consulted had looked at the Constitution and affirmed Mr Tan's understanding of the issue. But Mr Tan said he would ask the lawyer to go through it again, to see if there might be clauses he had overlooked before.
