Defeated Democrats pin hopes on Abhisit again

Mr Abhisit was unopposed and re-elected in a near-unanimous vote. -- PHOTO: AP BANGKOK - THAILAND'S opposition Democrat Party yesterday re-elected outgoing prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva as its party leader at a conclave in Bangkok. Mr Abhisit, who resigned from the party's leadership after its defeat in the July 3 election, was unopposed and won a near-unanimous vote. But he now has the tough task of reinventing a party that has not won an election since 1992. The Democrat Party is Thailand's oldest, and is dominated by conservatives. Even insiders say modernising and rejuvenating it will be an uphill battle. A party insider who described the poll defeat as the Democrats' 'Waterloo' said Mr Abhisit was seen as the only choice as leader if the party was to survive.
