Employment situation in S'pore is stable for now: Lim Swee Say

SINGAPORE: Labour chief Lim Swee Say said Singapore's employment situation is stable for now. This, even as the global economy is on the brink of slipping into a recession, brought on largely by the US and European debt crises. Speaking to reporters at his constituency National Day dinner in Bedok, Mr Lim said some companies in the unionised sector say business have slowed down, and they may need to prepare for a "shorter work week". He said retrenchment is not on the cards yet, but companies are getting ready to tighten their belts. Mr Lim said: "As a labour movement, should there be a downturn, job protection will obviously always be our priority. So the unions on the ground, we're monitoring the situation very closely. We're staying in very close touch with the companies and the management and we hear their suggestions. So if companies need to go into shorter work week....
