Singapore's money, forex markets functioning normally

SINGAPORE - The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) said on Monday that the country's money and foreign exchange markets continue to function normally, amid the turmoil in Asian markets caused by economic uncertainty in the United States and Europe. "MAS is closely monitoring developments in the global financial markets and their impact on the domestic markets and economy," MAS said in a statement. Stocks markets across Asia took a severe hit following S&P's move late Friday to cut the US' rating from AAA to AA+ with a negative outlook, the first time in modern history that one of the three main ratings firms has stripped the US of its triple-A status. In Singapore, the benchmark Straits Times Index closed 3.7% lower at 2884.00 after falling as much as 4.9% during the session.
