PM Lee delivers National Day Rally speech

SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has said the government will revise the income criterion for the Tertiary Tuition Fee Subsidy Scheme to cover more Malay families. Speaking in Malay in his National Day Rally (NDR) speech on Sunday evening, he said the income criterion has not changed since it was introduced 20 years ago. But he said the key principle remains, which is to let Malay students from poorer households enjoy free education. Currently, the scheme is open to families with income not exceeding S$3,000. A tertiary student will receive full subsidy if his or her monthly family income is less than S$2,000, while families with incomes between S$2,000 and S$3,000 will get 70 per cent subsidy. He said some Malay families who have to pay fees now may not be considered well-off by today's standards. They may also have more than one child studying in tertiary instit...
