Scheme to pay for tertiary education of needy Malay-Muslim students expanded: They may also have more than one c...

SINGAPORE - Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has announced that a scheme that pays for the tertiary education of needy Malay-Muslim students will be expanded to cover more families. PM Lee said this in his National Day Rally speech at the University Cultural Centre on Sunday evening in Malay for the country's Malay Muslim community. The Singapore Government will revise the income ceiling for the longstanding scheme that helps poorer Malay students pay for their tertiary education The income criteria had not changed since the scheme was introduced 20 years ago. Recipients must be from households with a gross monthly income of $2,001 to $3,000 to qualify for a 70 per cent subsidy, and $2,000 and below to get a full subsidy. Mr Lee said by today's standards, some Malay families who have to pay fees may not be considered well-off. They may also have more than one child studying ...
