I DON'T agree with the idea of Mr Ng Kok Lim ("Nationalising public transport can be profitable"; Aug 3). It is not a question of profitability in operating a public transport system. It is about maintaining a balance between the interest of the commuting public and the operators' prudent management. In the present model, a duopoly is sharing the country's complete bus and train infrastructures to serve the same captive commuters. This offers the duopoly assured profits without any incentive to woo passengers. There is no worry about fare revenues. We must turn the tables on transport operators and get them to woo commuters for profit by offering quality services with comfortable rides and timely arrivals. To achieve that, we could try to use a hybrid commuter-centric alternative where the bus system would be operated by SBS Transit, even while injecting more bus operators...
