Are spam SMSes getting out of hand?

I UNDERSTAND the frustrations of Ms Jacqueline Kuek ("Never-ending nuisance") and Mr Richard Seah ("Blocking spam SMSes too much of a hassle"; both on Aug 6). In the course of conducting my business as an SMS provider to reputable organisations, my guiding principle has always been to use only permitted groups of clients. For consumer businesses, they need to already have a decent membership programme in place before starting promotional SMS. "Marketing firms" have mushroomed, claiming they can provide "targeted SMS marketing" programmes for clients, which is simply using harvested database with questionable legitimacy. Market players that charge customers cheaply for each SMS sometimes harvest their databases.
