SYDNEY - Asian currency integration is decades away, Asian Development Bank president Haruhiko Kuroda said on Thursday, as he cast doubt on the Chinese yuan superseding the US dollar as a medium of exchange in the region. In an interview with the Australian Financial Review, Mr Kuroda said: "In 40, 50, or 60 years' time, there could be a common currency in some parts of East Asia or even broader than that." "I tend to think that in Asia, neither the yen nor the yuan or any national currency will become so widely used" as the US dollar, he added. The idea of a single regional currency was broached after the financial crisis of 1997-1998 but has largely remained little more than an aspiration amid the diverse stages of development across the economies in Asia.
