#SGpresident candidates should not assume they can check or audit the ruling government, says our reader.

I AM concerned about the apparent blurring of the distinct roles of the presidency and the parliamentary opposition in the campaigning to elect the next president. It would be a grave mistake for any candidate to assume that he possesses the platform to check or even audit the ruling government of the day. That responsibility resides with the parliamentary opposition. If any candidate assumes he can champion opposition causes or certain political affiliations through the presidency, he has lost his objectivity and neutrality, and cannot be an effective president. For instance, the British Prime Minister has weekly meetings with the Queen. On such occasions, the Queen, as head of state, steers clear of direct interference in government affairs but offers valuable counsel in private, given the fact that she has been Britain's head of state since 1953.
