SINGAPORE - Presidential candidate Tan Jee Say's combative stance - since he announced his intention to run for the office - led a member of the Hainan Tan Clan Association to question him yesterday whether someone who has had no links with the ruling party would "create trouble" for the Government and "put the economy in trouble". Mr Tan, who was having a dialogue with about 100 members of the association, replied that he "did not think so" and pointed out that the President's veto powers were limited - and a gridlock would be unlikely. Speaking to Today later, Mr Tan - who has received a police permit to hold a night-time rally next Tuesday at Toa Payoh Stadium - reiterated that the daily management of the economy is in the hands of the Government, not the President.
