EVER since pop consumerism, alongside the global phenomenon that is the celebrity chef, took hold of our appetites a few decades ago, we've turned a wide mix of personalities into a cast of culinary idols. From homespun Julia Childs to the Naked Chef, they offer guidance and inspiration. Sure, some will argue that they are more celebrity than revered guardians of good food, more Kim Kardashian with a knack for gourmet quick fixes than a media savvy Auguste Escoffier. But this phenomenon is not without its distinct cachet, which would explain its draw, and that, for the most part, is a good thing. It has helped revive the restaurant industry and consequently altered the way we break bread.
