PE: S'poreans vote for new President: SINGAPORE: About 2.27 million Singaporeans would be voting for their next

SINGAPORE: The Elections Department said 83.44 per cent of 2.27 million eligible voters have cast their votes as of 5pm Saturday, in Singapore's Presidential Election. The turnout by noon was 44.4 per cent. Polling stations across the island opened on Saturday at 8am. Singaporeans have up till 8pm to cast their votes. President S R Nathan and his wife arrived at Haig Girls' School in Joo Chiat at 8.30am to vote. Mr Nathan later told reporters the choice, for him, was not a tough one. He said he believes voters share one sentiment. "I know that Singaporeans are sensible people. Whatever their gripes, they will do what is best for Singapore," Mr Nathan said. As for his future plans, Mr Nathan said he would have until the September 1 to decide, which is a day after his term ends. President Nathan has served as Singapore's sixth president.
