Hurricane Irene weakens

MIAMI: Massive Hurricane Irene bearing down on the US East Coast weakened slightly early Saturday and was officially reclassified a Category One storm, the lowest grading, government forecasters said. At 0900 GMT (5pm Singapore time), Irene packed sustained winds of 90 miles (150 kilometres) an hour and was located just 35 miles (55 kilometers) south of Cape Lookout, North Carolina, the Miami-based National Hurricane Centre said. It downgraded the storm one notch to the lowest rung in a five-category hurricane grading. "Little change in strength is expected before Irene reaches the coast of North Carolina," the centre said in its latest advisory. "And Irene is expected to remain near the threshold of Category One and Category Two strength."
