PE: Counting begins

SINGAPORE: The counting of votes in Singapore's Presidential Election has started. Ballot boxes from the 781 polling stations islandwide were sealed and brought to 162 counting centres after polling ended at 8pm. At Hong Wen School, both a voting and counting centre, the sealed ballot boxes were brought to the counting section. Ballot boxes from neighbouring polling centres arrived at 8.40pm in a chartered bus, escorted by the police. In the counting centre, the boxes were opened and emptied for counting. All this was done in the presence of the candidates' agents. The counting of votes is done by civil servants and the process is supervised by Assistant Returning Officers. The public is not allowed into the counting centres but candidates and their agents can observe the counting process.
